Advancing Open Science Monitoring: insights from the FORM/OSMI co-hosted webinar

OSMI was delighted to co-host a webinar with FORM (Forum for Open Research in MENA) to introduce the Principles of Open Science Monitoring and explore their global relevance. The event brought together experts from UNESCO, the African Reproducibility Network, the Université de Lorraine, and other key stakeholders to discuss how OSMI’s framework can support equitable, transparent, and adaptable monitoring of open science practices.

A special thank you to FORM for their partnership in organising this session. Their mission to foster open science ecosystems in the Arab region aligns perfectly with OSMI’s goal of creating a modular, community-driven approach to monitoring. This collaboration underscores our shared commitment to making open science monitoring accessible, localised, and actionable across diverse research communities.

During the webinar, we:

  • Shared how the OSMI Principles (now available in 10+ languages, including Arabic) were co-developed through a global consultation;
  • Highlighted regional insights from UNESCO’s monitoring of the Arab States, where gaps in infrastructure and bibliometric bias were identified;
  • Showcased OSMI Working Group 2’s dataset of 90+ global monitoring initiatives, revealing underrepresented areas (e.g., non-publication pillars like societal engagement);
  • Announced OSMI’s next steps, including a self-assessment grid (to be unveiled September 30) and plans to expand community engagement.
