OSMI is proud to announce the release of a new community-curated dataset, which provides a structured overview of initiatives monitoring the implementation, uptake, and impact of Open Science around the world.
Developed by the OSMI Working Group 2: Understanding the open science monitoring landscape (WG2), the dataset brings together information on initiatives that track and evaluate different aspects of Open Science across geographical regions, disciplines, and organisational contexts.
What counts as an Open Science monitoring initiative?
Following the OSMI definition, an initiative qualifies for inclusion if it:
- Publicly and regularly monitors and evaluates trends or impacts related to open science policies, mechanisms, interventions, and/or incentives;
- May use quantitative, qualitative, or mixed-methods approaches;
- Monitors the degree of openness of scientific processes and outputs such as publications, software, or research data, and ideally also covers other pillars of Open Science (e.g. citizen science, economic or societal impact), across multiple stages of the research cycle.
A community-built resource
The first version of the dataset was compiled collaboratively by members of OSMI WG2, drawing on their expertise and knowledge of the international Open Science monitoring landscape. The resulting inventory was subsequently opened to public consultation, giving members of the wider Open Science community an opportunity to identify additional initiatives, correct existing information, and suggest improvements.
This community contribution has helped make the inventory more comprehensive and representative of the diverse approaches currently used to monitor Open Science.
A living inventory of Open Science monitoring
The dataset is designed as a living resource. As Open Science practices, policies, and monitoring approaches continue to develop, future versions will incorporate newly identified initiatives, updated metadata, and further community feedback.
OSMI WG2 welcomes suggestions for additional monitoring initiatives as well as corrections or improvements to existing records. If you know of a monitoring initiative that should be included, or have corrections to suggest, please get in touch with the OSMI Working Group 2 co-chairs.

The dataset provides researchers, policymakers, research organisations, and other stakeholders with a useful starting point for exploring how Open Science is currently being monitored and evaluated across different contexts.
